Agriculture

The Agriculture Sector of Paro Dzongkhag Administration envisions improving every household’s livelihood through food self-sufficiency and enhanced income from agricultural marketing. Its mission is to boost crop yields via proper pest- and disease-controlled crop management, timely supply of inputs, and close monitoring, while promoting farm mechanization—using power tillers, tractors, transplanters, and combine harvesters—to make farming more efficient.

Background of Agriculture Sector Paro Dzongkhag

The Dzongkhag Agriculture Sector under Paro plays a vital role in Agriculture farming and in food production.  Under the Dzongkhag, there are ten Gewogs, namely Naja, Dogar, Shaba, Wangchang, Lungyi, Hungrel, Dopshari, Doteng, Lamgong and Tshento, where in each, the Agriculture Extension Supervisor are the main bridge in disseminating the new technologies in the farmer’s field. The Dzongkhag Agriculture sector plans for budget every year from the 12^th FYP.

The main crops grown in the Dzongkhag are paddy, wheat, asparagus and potato. Vegetables like chili, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, brinjal and green leaves are grown in large scale for sale in the Paro town.

Apple is important cash crop grown in Paro. Hybrid Peach and Pears are also grown by farmers for sale. Apple is also exported to India and Bangladesh from Paro.  

Vision

The vision of the sector is to improve livelihood of every household through food self-sufficiency and increase the income generation of the households through marketing of agriculture products.

Mission

The missions of the sector are to increase the yield through proper crop management by controlling pest and disease, supply of agriculture inputs on time and timely monitoring of crops. Farm mechanization plays a major role in the crop production. The farm machineries include power tillers, tractors, transplanted, combined harvester which has become easy farming for the farmers in Paro.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Dzongkhag Agriculture Sector as a head of the sector deals with the public service delivery related with any agriculture issues and problems in ten Gewogs.

The main role of the sector is to provide the technical support to communities. The support also extends by exploring the budget from various agencies for acquiring the agriculture inputs.

The other responsibilities are in regard to land related issues such as conversions of wetland to dry land, from wetland to Khimsa and orchard to dry land. The sector is also a committee member for land exchange, house construction approval and priority lending sector (PSL). The Dzongkhag Agriculture sector compiles all the data from the Gewogs and updates the production of crops.

Extension Services

The Gewog Agriculture Extension Officers plays a critical role in providing the basic technical supports direct to the farmers in the field. They help in planning, supply of agriculture inputs on time, monitoring of crops and advise farmers for the proper crop management. The Extension supervisors links between the Dzongkhag and the farmers.
