Brief Background on the Institute:
In the past, the present –day Wanakha village did not have a proper name. The people of this village was the subjects of Chapcha Peonlop at that time. The people proved very sincere loyal and dedicated to the Peonlop.
Therefore the Peonlop and his officer praised the people of the village by saying “WonaKha Gi Meser Tshu” which means, the people from that place. Thus the place came to be known as Wonaka, which later became Wanakha.
The school is located just above the Thimphu Haa high way, which is 30 Km from Chhuzom. It is near the ruins of a big fort constructed by Lam Nyeningpa sometime in the 16th century. The school directly faces Chapcha Middle Secondary School. Wangchu river runs down the gorge between the two school. Before the establishment of the school, this spot was recreation place for his majesty the king Jigme Singye Wangchuk. His majesty used to visit the place quite often and held for a night or two.
With the proposal for the school submitted to his majesty the king, the school came into existence in 1991 with 40 students headed by Mr. Nima Tshering alone. He was later joined by Lopen Jigme Samdrup with 30 more students. The school at that time provided education to two gewogs of Chhukha Dzongkhag and a village of Naja Gewog under Paro Dzongkhag.
Mr. Keazang Doti became the next head teacher of the school. After three years of hardship, Mr.keazang Doti was replaced by Mr.Sangay Dorji. He managed the school from early 1995 to 5th April 2002.
In mid April 2002, Mr. Sangay Choda took over the charge of the school as new principal. In the next academic session, the school was upgraded to lower secondary school. The school which was previously under Chukhha Dzongkag came under Naja Gewog under Paro Dzongkhag in October 2006, based on the new demarcation of Dzongkhag boundaries.
Mr.Kinley Jamtsho, the current principal took over the charge of the school from 2014 onwards. In the year 2015, the school was upgraded to central school ranging from class PP to Ten. By the month of July academic year 2015 the school became autonomous.
Mr. Yeshi Dorji, is the current principal of Wanakha CS, till date.
